About Phantom Voixes

A Studio Built from story

Phantom Voixes is a vocal production house founded by Grammy-winning recording engineer and producer Raul Vega, bringing more than a decade of film-music experience together with years spent recording, directing, and producing voice talent. Nestled in North Hollywood’s NoHo Arts District, the studio brings those worlds together in a space built for cinematic demo production, ADR, coaching, and a wide range of voice-driven projects. The bridge between them began with a highly produced original audio-fiction podcast, where cinematic sound, storytelling, and performance first came together and eventually grew into Phantom Voixes itself.

BUILDING WORLDS FROM SOUND

In July 2012, I walked into Remote Control Productions for my first day of work with no idea how much the studio would shape the rest of my career. I came from a composition background, but quickly found my place in digital instrument design: recording musicians, voices, instruments, and unusual sounds, then helping transform them into playable tools for my boss, mentor and friend, Hans Zimmer. What began as an internship grew into a career spent helping build the sonic worlds behind some of the biggest films of the last decade, not to mention my first Grammy win for engineering on the score for Dune: Part Two (2024) .

It’s been over 14 years and I’m still learning to listen differently! A sound doesn’t have to begin as what it would eventually become. The best ideas often come from experimentation, collaboration, and a willingness to follow something unexpected. Over time, that way of thinking became much bigger than film music. I started wondering what would happen if I took everything I had learned about sound, atmosphere, and storytelling and used it to build a world of my own. So, that’s what I did when I made my first immersive fiction podcast Rose Drive

IMAGINATION, MADE FOR THE MIND’S EYE

Rose Drive became the place where everything I had learned about sound finally collided with writing, directing, acting, and story. I wrote it, scored it, recorded and directed the cast, edited the dialogue, built the sound design, and mixed the entire world around them. What made audio fiction so exciting was that the listener had to meet us halfway. The writing, performances, score, and sound could shape the scene, but the final image lived in their imagination. What started as a creative experiment grew into a full-scale fiction podcast, found an audience far beyond what I expected, and even earned recognition from Forbes. More importantly, it taught me that as much as I loved building sounds, I loved building performances just as much.

Where Voice-Driven Storytelling Began

That world eventually led to Swiss and Lali Hijack Hollywood, a much lighter, stranger playground that pushed me even further into directing and producing an ensemble of actors, including Harley Quinn Smith, Brooke Markham and legendary comedian Patton Oswalt. Somewhere along the way, performers from both shows started asking me to make their VO demo reels. My first reaction was basically, “Sure! ...what the hell is a VO reel?” So I learned. And because I came to demos through audio fiction, I never really learned to think of them as a string of disconnected voices. I thought in scenes, characters, relationships, environments, and just enough detail to let the listener’s imagination do the rest. Years later, that little side request would become one of the foundations of Phantom Voixes.

AND WE’RE JUST GETTING STARTED

After years of working on the biggest scores in Hollywood, building a VO studio was the last thought on my mind. But Phantom Voixes isn’t a departure from everything that came before it. It’s the place where all of it finally had somewhere to meet. The ears I developed with Hans and my music colleagues at RCP, the storytelling instincts I found through audio fiction, and years spent recording and directing performers now shape the way every session runs here: thoughtful, technically precise, collaborative, and a comfortable space to take a chance.

And we’re still growing! I’m still working in film music, still learning, still experimenting, and bringing those experiences back into this room every day. Phantom Voixes was never meant to be a studio reserved for one kind of artist or one level of experience. It’s a place for great work, curious people, and voices at every stage. Wherever the next chapter leads, that part won’t change. We’re just getting started, and I can’t wait  for you to be part of our story.
